Romance and Scottish Heather

Romance, Coastal towns, and Picturesque Scenery

It’s no wonder that every bookstore has at least one novel about a bonny lass being swept off her feet by a highlander with a sexy brogue – Scotland is a romantic’s dream destination. Beyond our obsession with Jamie Fraser (the hunk from Outlander) there are many other draws to visit the land of folklore and superstition.

Travel during the Scottish Heather Season

One of the most beautiful times of year to visit Scotland is nearly upon us: heather season. Heather blooms from late July to early September, making August the ideal time to visit. The most common varieties of Scottish heather grow freely and abundantly in the moorland, glens and hills. It’s found in colours ranging from lilac to purple and has many uses for Scots, including a delicious ale and delicate honey.

White heather however, now that’s a rare and wonderful find! A Scottish folktale tells the sad story of a maiden whose betrothed died in battle. The messenger who brought her the tragic news gifted her with a spray of purple heather that her beloved had sent as a final token of his undying love. When the maiden’s tears fell on the heather, it turned the petals white and she proclaimed: “although it is the symbol of my sorrow, may the white heather bring good fortune to all who find it.” (Scottish-at-heart.com) White heather is considered lucky, especially for brides and is common in bouquets, centrepieces and decorations.
